About the One-Man Shop Behind the Lathe
I’m Michael Wahl—the maker, turner, packer, and broom-sweeper here. From a big farm in Northern California, I craft small-batch, hand-turned pieces in the hours before work, after dinner, and on weekends. Each release is limited, thoughtful, and meant to be used.
Meet Michael
Well Made Wood is a solo workshop. There’s no assembly line—just me, my lathe, and a lot of sandpaper. Bowls, boards, trays, mills, pens—each item is shaped by hand to bring out the wood’s natural character.
Materials That Matter
I sustainably source wood from all over—storm-fallen and reclaimed lumber from the farm, offcuts from local mills, and responsibly harvested species from trusted partners. Every blank is chosen for its grain and story.
- Reclaimed & storm-fallen whenever possible
- Minimal waste—scraps become smaller goods
- Food-safe finishes for pieces that belong on tables, not just shelves
How I Work
Small-Batch Craft
This shop runs on spare time and stubborn care. I turn, sand, and finish each piece myself, so drops are limited and never rushed.
Built to Be Used
Pieces are made for kitchens, desks, and daily life. Form follows grain—strength, balance, and a finish that feels good in the hand.
Values
- One maker, start to finish.
- Sustainable & respectful sourcing and processes.
- Honest materials—the wood leads, I follow.
Have a meaningful board, branch, or fallen tree you’d like transformed? I take on custom commissions when my schedule allows.
