Frequently Asked Questions
Well Made Wood by WahlCraft is a one-man, small-batch wood shop in Northern California. Every piece is hand-turned, sanded, and finished by Michael—no assembly line, just honest materials and careful work.
About the Shop
Who’s behind Well Made Wood?
I’m Michael Wahl—the maker, turner, packer, and broom-sweeper. I work early mornings, late evenings, and weekends to release small batches that are thoughtful and meant to be used.
Why do drops sell out?
It’s a one-man shop. I give each piece proper time on the lathe and finishing bench, so inventory is limited and never rushed. If a drop sells out, another is already in the works.
Where does your wood come from?
I prioritize reclaimed and storm-fallen wood from our own property, offcuts from local mills, and responsibly harvested species from trusted partners. Living on a large piece of land in Northern California means I often mill our fallen trees—and there’s a good stash of manzanita when the grain is right.
Do you include wood butter?
Yes—I usually tuck in a small tin of wood butter (food-safe oil & wax) so you can refresh boards and bowls right away.
Are finishes food-safe?
Pieces intended for food contact are finished with food-safe oils and waxes. They’re made to live on tables and countertops—not just shelves.
What kinds of things do you make?
Bowls, boards, trays, mills, pens, and other goods for daily use. Form follows grain—each design responds to the wood in front of me.
Care, Customs & Shipping
How do I care for cutting boards and salad bowls?
- Hand-wash with mild soap; no soaking or dishwasher.
- Dry immediately and store where air can circulate.
- Refresh with the included wood butter whenever the surface looks dry.
- Avoid prolonged heat or direct sun.
Will wood move or crack?
All wood breathes with the seasons. I orient grain, season blanks, and finish carefully to minimize movement, but small shifts or checks can occur—this is natural and part of real wood.
Can you turn my sentimental tree or beam?
Often, yes—that’s some of my favorite work. Send photos, rough dimensions, and what you imagine it becoming. I’ll confirm feasibility and suggest options.
Do you take custom commissions?
When my schedule allows. Share size, species (I can often use wood from our property, including manzanita), intended use, and budget. I’ll reply with options and a clear timeline before we start.
Do you ship gifts?
Happily. I can include a short handwritten note and pack in recyclable, plastic-lite materials. Each box ships from Northern California.
What if something arrives damaged or I have an issue?
Take a few photos of the box and item and contact me right away. I’ll make it right with a repair, replacement, or refund depending on the situation.
